The first of the three field hospitals donated by the Kingdom will begin operating in Cairo on Friday.
“The hospital is fully equipped and staffed with doctors and technicians,” Saudi Ambassador to Egypt Ahmed Kattan said in a statement as two planes landed at Cairo East Airbase with the second field hospital on Thursday.
The medical facility from the Saudi National Guard Hospitals consists of two operation theaters, an X-ray room, a room for emergency care, a sterilization unit, a laboratory, a pharmacy and an emergency resuscitation room, in addition to equipment for rapid intervention.
It also contains rapid clinics and triage centers, besides an internal nursing unit for observing less serious cases, Kattan said, adding that the 50-80 bed hospitals will be fully operational in two days, the said.
“The air bridge assistance ordered by the king aims to provide assistance to the wounded and suffering in Egypt,” Kattan said.
Thanking the king for his humanitarian gesture, Maj. Gen. Ahmed Al-Halim, assistant director-general of the Egyptian Military Medical Services, said the first field hospital arrived in Cairo in 16 Royal Saudi Air Force planes.
Meanwhile, the Egyptian Council of Foreign Affairs said Saudi Arabia’s stance was aimed at fortifying the Egyptian government and its people against terror plots.
In a letter sent to Kattan inviting him to visit the council, its chairman Muhammad Shakir said King Abdullah’s stance was steeped in pan-Arabism and was driven by the spirit of solidarity among Arabs.
